More Moor

An interactive learning environment for multisensory exploration of the moor ecosystem

Although moors only cover 3% of the world's land area, they store twice as much climate-damaging gases in the soil as all the world's forests combined and also form a rare habitat for endangered species. In view of their increasing extinction and the acute climate and species crisis, awareness of the global importance of moorlands must be raised.

This work explores how interactive experiences can contribute to emotional learning about the moor ecosystem and promote engagement in moorland conservation. Aspects of ecology, psychology and pedagogy are combined in the design to highlight how multisensory elements in an interactive environment can create emotional connections to moorlands and sustainably strengthen educational strategies for environmental protection.

In collaboration with composer Nepomuk Heller, the audio recordings collected in the moor over two years were analyzed, interpreted, and combined into an emotional sound experience. This is complemented by a story from the perspective of the moor, speaking of its experiences, its relationship with humans, as well as its hopes and opportunities. The sounds are transmitted through the soft materials, allowing them to be experienced audibly and physically on the walkable floor sculpture, which can be explored with the whole body.
