Automation Needs Intention

How to design rules for Human-Machine Collaboration? How to create «simple» algorithms to enrich your design process?
Fragmentin will discuss and dissect the creative process and assisted curation behind its artwork series Hyperhighways – centered on highway signage, automation, and machine vision, exhibited in REFRESH #6 – highlighting the importance of the designer choices in generative processes. The masterclass is a collective reflection on the designer’s role in the age of automation, drawing parallels with autonomous cars, where so-called «self-driving» systems only function because of human rules, training, and oversight—reminding us that automation is never neutral, but shaped and steered by design choices.

Fragmentin is an artist collective based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Founded in 2014, it is currently composed of three artists trained at ECAL (École cantonale d’art de Lausanne): Laura Nieder (*1991, Lausanne), David Colombini (*1989, Lausanne), and Marc Dubois (*1985, Basel). At the crossroads of art and engineering, Fragmentin’s work questions the impact of the digital on everyday life by investigating these technologies' disposition towards control and opacity. Their works often serve as platforms for dialogue around urgent contemporary issues, such as climate change. Through sculpture, installation, video, interaction, and performance, Fragmentin's practice demystifies complex systems and exposes the tensions generated by emerging technologies.
