The Ecological Class Struggle – with Special Attention to the Importance of Aesthetics and Affects

How come we are constantly bombarded with information about the unfolding, climatic catastrophe, but ecological mobilization is so limited? How come so many agree that climate change is the most important problem of our times, but Green parties around Europe all struggle to get over the electoral threshold? And under what conditions could ecology begin competing on equal footing with the old ideologies that continue to define the political landscape? In this lecture, Danish sociologist Nikolaj Schultz tries to diagnose these political stagnations and indicate potential pathways towards a strong ecological movement, by drawing on key insights from his and Bruno Latour's recently published book «On the Emergence of an Ecological Class» (Polity Books, 2022).

Nikolaj Schultz (University of Copenhagen) is a Danish sociologist who works on the implications of climate change for social theory. Together with Bruno Latour, he co-authored «On the Emergence of an Ecological Class» (Polity Books, 2022), translated into 12 languages. Earlier this year, he published «Land Sickness» (Polity Books, 2023), translated into 6 languages. His work has been praised by many of the world's leading thinkers, and German newspaper Die Zeit recently called Schultz «der Nachwuchsstar der Soziologie».
