Spatial Augmented Reality

Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) is the little known half-sibling of Augmented Reality (AR). While AR is well known to most of us, thanks to the ubiquity of the multifunctional smartphones in our pockets, SAR has been used mainly in the confined spaces of computer research labs and high-budget entertainment events. Only recently, thanks to developments in hard- and software, the tools – such as tracking based projection mapping – are now ready to be used in a broader context.

Spatial Augmented Reality is a major research focus at the Immersive Arts Space and the exploration of its practical applications is part of multiple research projects of which two («The Umbrella Project» and «Floating in Dancing Lights») will be presented as live performances at REFRESH#3.

This talk will give a brief introduction to the history of SAR, looking at the challenges, limitations and possibilities by showing a selection of projects that have been realized so far.

Martin Fröhlich studied Mechanical engineering and Media Art at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. His work oscillates between arts and technology, and ranges from computer animations to interactive art spaces, from experimental digital music interfaces to spatial augmented reality toolsets. He conceptualizes his artworks or inventions as tools to alter the audience mode of perception and reflection. Currently, he is working as senior research associate and team leader for the Immersive Arts Space at the Zurich University of the Arts.
