Amel Alzakout
Creating an Urgent Point of View
In her masterclass, Amel Alzakout gives insight into the making of the film «Purple Sea», which is based on her own experience on a boat that sank with more than 300 refugees on board, causing the death of at least 43. Amel recorded the dramatic events with a camera tied to her wrist. Together with co-director Khaled Abdulwahed she created a breathtaking filmic experience, entirely based on this footage. «Purple Sea» will be screened on Friday, September 18th, 2020, at 8:00 pm in the Toni Cinema. Amel's footage is also part of the 2-channel video installation «Shipwreck at the Threshold of Europe, Lesvos, Aegean Sea» (Forensic Architecture) in the REFRESH exhibition.
Amel Alzakout, born 1988 in Syria, is an artist, puppet maker and filmmaker based in Leipzig. Between 2010 and 2013 she studied Journalism at Cairo University (Egypt). Between 2017 and 2018 she studied art at Weißensee Art Academy in Berlin. Since 2019 she studies media art at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig. For her future experimental video projects, she started creating a series of puppet-characters in 2013 and writes about them. In 2017 she participated with other artists in the video installation «TRUST US» in the 3rd Herbstsalon at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin.
